  • mrsbbookreviews.wordpress4.5 starsAs a West Australian girl born and bred, the construction of the NSW based, Snowy Mountains scheme to bring hydroelectricity to the region from the late 1940 s, through to the early 1970 s, seems to have escaped my attention One of Australia s best known storytellers, Judy Nunn, ensures that this pivotal engineering project is not lost in the history books.Following the devastating effects of World War II, many refugees decided they needed a new future abroad, l [...]

  • They came to change the course of a river and changed the course of their lives After World War II, in the early 1950s, migrants from over many different countries came to Australia to work on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme Their destination was the town of Cooma, New South Wales which was central to the Snowy Scheme This novel explores the stories of a number of different characters, from their lives in Berlin, Israel, Argentina and the Italian Alps to Australia, where their stories [...]

  • It took me until about half way through the book to start really getting into it and then by the end I couldn t put it down I love the backdrop for the story and visiting all the different countries.

  • I didn t like this one at first but the I read the it interested me The horror of the Death camp, the way the Nazis escaped and this one Nazi s trail of murder was so well told as was the story of Ruth one of his victims who escaped The way they all ended up in The Snowy Scheme is totally believabe given the times I remember and the friends who met there.

  • The story of so many looking to move on with their lives who inevitably find their lives intertwined My first Judy Nunn book and quite an interesting one.

  • Another amazing read by Judy Nunn I am ashamed to say it has taken me so long to discover this author, on a postive note, with an extensive back book of novels, I have many enjoyable reading hours ahead.Like previous novels, Nunn brings to life this beautiful country of ours, Cooma became as much a central charachter as the many migrants of the Snowy Mountain Scheme Really enjoyed reading about the diverse culture of those who came from all over the world to Cooma Learning of the Snowy Mountain [...]

  • Heritage by Judy NunnThe Hydro Electric Scheme was the largest engineering and construction feat Australia had ever taken on The purpose was for irrigation of the very dry interior and the harnessing of hydro electric power The scheme employed mostly migrant workers as there was a shortage of local labor after the war Refugees from than seventy countries fled to Australia to find new lives and a new identity after the end of WW11 From the ruins of Berlin to the birth of Israel, from the Italian [...]

  • Phew glad that s finished It was a struggle at times and enjoyable at other times I really wanted to read all about the characters involved with the snowy mountains scheme it sounded so interesting There were parts about the history of Cooma and surrounds which were well worth a read but Judy concentrated on their European backgrounds and how they all intertwined together which was at times confusing and unbelievable Won t rush out to read another Judy Nunn book.

  • Great book lovely mix of what life was like in the early days of the Snowy Mountains Scheme and the transition of characters from various parts of Europe You get to know the characters and the course their life takes over time There are lots of surprises and twists in the book Sometimes a little too coincidental, but a really great read Second half of the book really comes to life Hang in there

  • Another ripper read from Judy Nunn Again her formula writing holds that one perfect character who the whole world loves and a totally inconceivable way all the characters end up in the same place, however the history is fascinating and the story gripping Yes it is fiction and for the most part light fiction, so if it s read with this in mind it s a rather entertaining book.

  • This is about a group of immigrants working on the creation of the Snowy river project in the 1950s including how they got there having escaped Europe after WW2.It took a while to get going, and while not a bad story, with some interesting historical back story, the plot relies far too much on implausible coincidences It got exciting towards the end.

  • I loved this book, as it related to my family who came out to Australia as displaced persons after WW2 and one did work on the Snowy River scheme Very real characters, with a twist that kept me reading until the end Highly recommended except a few small explicit scenes which I didn t think added to the story.

  • Jews are moved to the concentration camps, people are getting out of Germany and some are heading to the Snowy Mountain Scheme in Australia An exact insight into Australia in the 50 s How Aussies looked down on the wogs , Ities every nationality had a nickname given to them by Australians Cooma and its people during the building of the Hydro Electric Scheme.

  • Life in the Snowy mountains during the construction after the war is well researched and rings true Good story but with some rather obvious and unlikely twists Worth reading but only really for the insights into post war Australian life

  • Loved this book as a member of my family worked on the Snowy Mountain Scheme so was able to get an insight and identify with the era that this book was written in It s perhaps my favourite Judy Nunn book so far.

  • I did enjoy this book As always, Judy Nunn has done her research and it shows with her knowledge of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme Another winner.

  • Took a while to get going but was rivetting by the end Great insight into life during the building of the Snowy River Scheme

  • The first half of the book was very slow but it did get better in the second half although I found the coincidence of all the characters ending up in the same place a bit hard to believe.

  • Great Book Great author 570 pages happy sad interesting horrifying satisfying all the preceding and I enjoyed it on a trip from Stockholm to Brisbane.
